The Cleanup 2018 Day 1 : 03-03-2018

We kicked off the first day of cleaning Tassie's wildest beaches today.

We jumped off our boats, and into rubber dinghies and landed on Noyhener Beach with two bags each. Matt Dell, our Clean Up Captain, briefed us on our mission: shoreline debris. We spread out and started combing the beach, covering it with footprints, and soon had hauled in a decent load of rubbish, everything from big plastic barrels to tiny pieces of micro plastics.

Some of the animals we spotted today included dolphins, seals, shy albatross, mutton birds, and hooded plovers. We knew other animals had visited the beach not too long ago, because we saw tracks of Tasmanian devils and birds of prey.

Thanks to Pat from last year we can see this map. Getting to the remote south west of Tasmania is quite tricky. Have a look at this Google map, it shows the route we are taking.

Tonight we counted and catalogued every piece of rubbish as part of the ongoing research into to the amount, and types of debris that end up on Tassie's beaches. Today, we collected 4134 pieces of plastic.
